As Akbük’s summer population swells, a local globetrotter warns that the resulting waste crisis is reaching critical levels, urging both the municipality and the expat community to take immediate action to preserve our beautiful Aegean home.
Having lived in the Didim and Akbük area for two decades, I’ve seen this beautiful corner of the Aegean transform. But with growth comes responsibility. Recently, a passionate local resident named Vedo—a 60-year-old seasoned traveler who has seen everything from the golden beaches of Goa to the dusty streets of Kathmandu—shared a stark warning. He noted that while Akbük remains a serene, Zen-like paradise in the winter, the tenfold increase in our summer population turns our home into an environmental battleground, plagued by overflowing bins and plastic-strewn beaches.
It’s a sentiment many of us in the expat community share. Walking along our beautiful coastline only to step on plastic bottle caps or dealing with the unpleasant odors in the heat of summer shouldn’t be our reality. It is time to stop simply complaining and look at real, actionable solutions.
How the Local Municipality Can Take the Lead
First and foremost, our local authorities must adapt to Akbük’s unique seasonal dynamics. The standard winter waste collection routine simply cannot cope with the summer influx. We need dynamic waste collection schedules, utilizing real-time tracking to double the frequency of bin collections along the coast and in densely populated residential areas during the peak months.
Furthermore, it is time to phase out outdated, unhygienic metal dumpsters. Transitioning to modern underground waste systems or smart containers equipped with fill-level sensors is no longer a luxury—it is an absolute necessity for a town of Akbük’s caliber. Finally, establishing clearly marked, easily accessible recycling stations for glass, plastic, and paper in every neighborhood would encourage residents to dispose of waste responsibly.

Small Steps We Can Take as a Community
While we must hold local authorities accountable, we as residents also bear a significant responsibility. Keeping our environment clean starts at home. We can easily transition to a ‘plastic diet’ by ditching single-use plastic bags and water bottles in favor of reusable canvas bags and flasks. Every piece of plastic we avoid is one less microplastic particle ending up in our beautiful bay.
Another fantastic step is home composting. Nearly sixty percent of our household waste is organic. Instead of letting it rot in plastic bags, we can easily compost it in our gardens or balcony pots, turning waste into nutrient-rich soil. Lastly, we must foster a spirit of neighborhood volunteerism. Picking up a piece of litter on your street or gently encouraging neighbors to do the same doesn’t diminish us—it empowers us. Let’s work together to keep Akbük beautiful, clean, and welcoming for everyone.
