The life cycle of the eel begins in the depths of the Sargasso Sea. Carried by ocean currents, their larvae eventually reach the Mediterranean, with some making their way up the Great Menderes River into the Bafa Lake basin. Here, they grow for years before, at the time of reproduction, they begin their epic return migration back to the Sargasso Sea. Danish scientist Johannes Schmidt’s nearly 18 years of research confirmed that the youngest larvae are found in the Sargasso Sea, but the precise location, depth, and method of mating remain one of nature’s greatest unsolved puzzles.
