Harvesting the Streets: Didim’s Public Parks Yield Premium Olive Oil

Didim Municipality has officially launched its annual olive harvest, turning the fruit from trees in public parks and green spaces into the locally celebrated ‘Didyma’ olive oil brand.

Turning Public Spaces into Productive Landscapes

As the olive harvest season descends upon the Aegean coast, Didim is taking a unique approach to urban agriculture. The Parks and Gardens Department teams have begun meticulously hand-picking olives from trees located within the municipality’s own responsibility areas, including public parks and communal green belts. This initiative ensures that no fruit goes to waste, transforming decorative greenery into a source of high-quality local produce.

The Journey to the Didyma Brand

Once gathered, these olives are transported to local pressing facilities where they are processed into extra virgin olive oil. This liquid gold is then bottled under the municipality’s own ‘Didyma’ brand. For those of us living here, it’s a fantastic example of a local value chain; the oil is made available to residents and expats alike through municipal sales points, offering a direct link from the soil of our parks to our kitchen tables.

More Than Just Oil: A Cultural Symbol

The harvest in the parks is a reflection of the wider agricultural heritage of the region. It symbolizes the hard work of local producers who toil year-round in the groves—from soil preparation and tree maintenance to the final press. For the international community in Didim and Akbük, this season represents the very heart of Aegean life, where ancient traditions meet modern municipal management.

Direct Support for Local Producers

Beyond its own harvest, the Didim Municipality is actively supporting the region’s farmers through the “Olive Market” (Zeytin Pazarı). This initiative allows local growers to sell their products directly to the consumer without intermediaries, ensuring fairer prices for the farmers and better value for the public.

A Message from Mayor Hatice Gençay

Mayor Hatice Gençay emphasized that the olive is far more than just an agricultural product for Didim. “The olives of Didim are a part of our soil, the labor of our producers, and the deep-rooted production culture of this city,” she stated. “We collect the olives in our parks with the hands of our own staff and transform them into Didyma olive oil.

Our priority is ensuring that those who produce on Didim’s land receive the reward for their labor. Through our Olive Market, we encourage direct access to local products under fair conditions. We will continue to protect our land, our producers, and the values of Didim.”
