Exploring Kapıkırı: A Hidden Gem Near Akbük

Discover Kapıkırı Village on Lake Bafa. Explore the ancient ruins of Herakleia, hike the Latmos Mountains, and experience authentic Aegean life near Didim.

As the summer crowds fade away, the Aegean reveals its quietest and most enchanting corners; Kapıkırı Village, nestled on the shores of Lake Bafa, offers a unique blend of ancient history and authentic rural life that is perfect for an autumn escape.

Having lived in this region for two decades, I have seen many places change, but Kapıkırı remains one of those rare spots where time seems to have stood still. Situated on the border of Aydın and Muğla, this village is built directly over the ruins of the ancient city of Herakleia. It is one of the few places in the world where you can see a modern stone house sharing a wall with a two-thousand-year-old fortification.

Living History Among the Ruins

Walking through Kapıkırı is a surreal experience. On one side, you see the daily rhythms of village life—laundry hanging out to dry and smoke rising from chimneys—and on the other, you are surrounded by ancient city walls, ornate sarcophagi, and rock-cut tombs. The traces of Herakleia are woven into the very fabric of the village. The local women often run small, cozy pensions surrounded by silver-green olive trees, serving traditional breakfasts featuring home-grown olives, local cheeses, and handmade preserves. It is the epitome of the simple, soulful Aegean lifestyle.

The Mystical Beauty of Lake Bafa

Lake Bafa has a fascinating history; it was once a gulf of the Aegean Sea until the silt from the Great Menderes River cut it off, turning it into a brackish lake. Today, it offers a hauntingly beautiful landscape, especially in the autumn light. For those who enjoy the outdoors, the shores of the lake provide excellent opportunities for birdwatching, with pelicans and herons frequently spotted. Whether you are chatting with local fishermen or simply enjoying a glass of tea as the sun sets over the water, the tranquility here is unmatched.

Hiking to the Yediler Monastery

For the more adventurous, a hike into the Latmos Mountains is a must. About an hour’s walk from the village center lies the Yediler Monastery. This Byzantine structure is tucked away among the massive, weathered boulders that the region is famous for. The trail takes you through ancient olive groves and rugged goat paths. Once you reach the monastery, you can still see incredible frescoes that have survived since the Byzantine era, offering a silent testimony to the area’s deep spiritual history.

The Best Time to Visit and Travel Tips

While Kapıkırı is beautiful year-round, I always recommend the spring or autumn months for visiting. The summer heat can be quite intense, making the uphill treks to the ruins and monasteries a bit of a challenge. If you are coming from Izmir, the drive is roughly 170 kilometers and takes about two and a half to three hours via the Söke-Milas route. For those using public transport, buses to Söke or Milas are your best bet, followed by local transport options to reach the lakeside.

Whether you visit for a day or stay for a weekend, Kapıkırı and the surrounding Latmos area offer more than just a sightseeing trip; they offer a chance to reconnect with a slower, more meaningful pace of life.
