A Sequential Collapse: Kerem Beach Becomes the Latest Victim of Akbük’s Sewage Crisis

Following the Gülkent leak, Kerem Beach in Akbük faces a raw sewage crisis. Discover the health risks and infrastructure failures threatening our coastline.

Having called Akbük my home for twenty years, I have witnessed our stunning coastline face many challenges, but the current situation is truly alarming; following a previous disaster at Gülkent, raw sewage is now flowing into the sea at Kerem Beach, signaling a systemic infrastructure collapse that threatens our health, our environment, and our community’s future.

The turquoise waters of the Aegean are the reason many of us chose to settle in this beautiful corner of Turkey. However, that very beauty is currently under siege. Reports from the vicinity of Kerem Beach indicate a significant and untreated sewage leak flowing directly into the bay. This isn’t just an isolated incident; it feels like the next chapter in a worrying pattern of neglect that we previously saw unfolding in the Gülkent area. Our paradise is being compromised, and the local community is rightfully demanding answers.

A Predictable Pattern of Infrastructure Failure

For those who have been paying attention, this latest leak was almost predictable. It seems we are witnessing a slow-motion domino effect across Akbük’s coastline. First, it was the infrastructure at Gülkent that gave way, and now the Kerem Site area is facing the exact same nightmare. This sequential failure suggests that the existing network is no longer capable of handling the demands of our growing town. As more residential complexes rise on the hills, the pipes beneath us are quite literally bursting under the pressure.

Rising Public Health Risks

The consequences of this environmental failure are no longer theoretical—they are biological. Local residents and visitors have reported a spike in medical issues, specifically high fevers and gastrointestinal distress such as diarrhea. Local clinics are seeing an influx of patients who have recently been in contact with the water near the affected areas. While the unpleasant odor from the treatment plant has been a long-term nuisance, this physical overflow represents a dangerous escalation that poses a direct threat to the international and local population alike.

The Burden of Rapid Development

The root cause of this crisis is a classic case of urban growth outpacing essential services. Akbük has seen rapid development over the last decade, but the investment in sewage and water treatment has lagged far behind. There is a growing fear among expats and locals that if infrastructure is not prioritized over new construction, there will eventually be no clean sea left for anyone to enjoy. We are at a tipping point where the environment can no longer absorb the cost of our expansion.

A Call for Accountability

Currently, there is a frustrating amount of finger-pointing between the Aydın Metropolitan Municipality and the Didim Local Municipality. While authorities shuffle responsibility back and forth, the waste continues to pour into our swimming areas. The community is tired of excuses. We need a transparent plan for a total infrastructure overhaul before the damage to Akbük’s reputation and ecosystem becomes irreversible. As residents who care deeply for this region, we will not stay silent while our home is polluted.
