Akbük’s Green Dilemma: Is Zeytin Park a Sign of Change, or a Sole Exception?

Jonathan, a 20-year expat, critically examines Didim Municipality’s green promises, contrasting the Zeytin Park Project with Akbük’s 5-6 storey buildings and neglected green spaces.

As a long-term resident, I’ve seen Didim and Akbük flourish, but not without growing pains. While the exciting Zeytin Park Project in Didim promises a verdant future, many of us in Akbük are left wondering if this commitment to green spaces and thoughtful urban planning truly extends to our own bustling community, where towering buildings often overshadow the very nature we cherish.

A Vision for Didim: The Zeytin Park Project

Exciting developments are indeed underway in Didim, with the much-anticipated Zeytin Park Project swiftly progressing. This initiative, a key pledge from Mayor Hatice Gençay’s election campaign, is set to transform a natural olive grove into a vibrant, nature-harmonious social living space. The vision is clear: a greener, more community-focused future for all residents, including our vibrant expat community.

The Didim Municipality, under Mayor Hatice Gençay’s leadership, aims to enhance urban green infrastructure. The Zeytin Park Project is presented as a testament to this vision, meticulously designed to preserve the unique character and natural beauty of the existing olive grove. Instead of merely building over it, the project intends to integrate modern amenities with the serene, established landscape, creating a seamless blend of natural tranquility and accessible community facilities.

Upon its completion, Zeytin Park is expected to serve as a vital new hub where families, friends, and neighbours can gather, relax, and connect with nature. Imagine strolls through ancient olive trees, children playing in thoughtfully designed spaces, and peaceful corners for quiet reflection – all within the heart of Didim. This commitment to preserving natural assets while creating functional social areas is, on paper, truly commendable.

Jonathan’s Perspective: A Green Vision, or Selective Serenity?

Having called Didim and Akbük home for two decades, I’ve witnessed firsthand the incredible growth and transformation of this region. What always stands out is our shared appreciation for the natural beauty that surrounds us. Projects like Zeytin Park aren’t just about adding another park; they’re about enhancing our quality of life and fostering community spirit.

However, for those of us who live in Akbük, a different picture often emerges when we look at our own development. While the commitment to green spaces is laudable in Didim’s Zeytin Park, many of us question if this vision truly extends across the entire municipality. We’ve witnessed buildings in Akbük often rising to 5 or even 6 storeys, far exceeding the permitted three-storey planning regulations. This unchecked vertical growth, unfortunately, often comes hand-in-hand with a municipal approach that seems to overlook the vital importance of green spaces.

Beyond the lack of new tree planting, there’s a noticeable neglect of existing greenery. It makes one question how consistently a ‘nature-friendly’ vision, championed by Mayor Hatice Gençay, is applied across the entire district. While Zeytin Park is a welcome step, the contrast with Akbük’s urbanisation – the soaring buildings, the unplanted verges, the unmaintained existing trees – is stark and undeniable. For expats and locals alike, a true ‘green future’ needs to be a holistic one, not just confined to specific, high-profile projects.

Looking Ahead: Bridging the Green Divide in Akbük

The Zeytin Park Project is more than just a construction endeavour; it’s a clear demonstration of the Didim Municipality’s promise to deliver a “more beautiful Didim.” Yet, for Akbük, the challenge remains to ensure that this promise translates into tangible action across all neighbourhoods. Sustainable development means not only creating new green spaces but also protecting existing ones, enforcing planning regulations, and actively planting and maintaining trees throughout our rapidly developing towns.

As residents, we look forward to seeing a comprehensive commitment to nature and community that embraces Akbük with the same enthusiasm seen in projects like Zeytin Park. A truly ‘nature-friendly’ municipality is one where green spaces thrive in every corner, balancing essential urban growth with the preservation of the natural beauty that drew many of us here in the first place.
