Didim’s Alevi-Bektashi Cultural Centre: A Community United for a Brighter Future?

Discover the extensive renovation efforts at Didim’s Alevi-Bektashi Cultural Centre, from roof repairs to new facilities, and how the community is coming together to support this vital cultural hub.

As someone who has called Didim home for two decades, I’ve always admired the vibrant spirit of our local communities. The Didim Alevi-Bektashi Cultural Centre, a cornerstone of cultural and spiritual life since its construction in 2004, is currently undergoing significant renovation work to ensure it continues to serve its members for generations to come.

It’s no secret that buildings, much like ourselves, show their age after a couple of decades. The Cultural Centre, unfortunately, has been battling persistent issues with rainwater ingress, making vital repairs long overdue. However, rather than simply patching things up, the dedicated team behind the Centre is embarking on a comprehensive modernisation project.

A Legacy of Community and Culture

While the current focus is on a critical roof repair, this isn’t the first time the community has rallied to improve the Centre. Over the years, countless hours and resources have been poured into enhancing its facilities. The kitchen area has been completely refurbished, the Dede’s (spiritual leader’s) room has seen a full renovation and new furnishings, and the entire electrical system has been updated. The dining hall now boasts stylish new rattan chairs, and the library has been revitalised, enriching its collection of books to foster a love for reading and learning.

A Holistic Approach to Modernisation

Beyond the interior, the Centre’s grounds have also received considerable attention. The canteen area has new kitchen cabinets, and the garden now features beautiful pergolas, offering much-needed shade in various spots. New trees have been planted, transforming the outdoor space into a greener, more inviting area. For our younger community members, a brand-new children’s park has been installed, providing a safe and fun environment for play. Security has also been a priority, with wire fencing now securing the garden walls and a comprehensive camera system monitoring both the interior and exterior of the Centre.

The Critical Roof Renovation Underway

The most pressing project currently, and one that many in the community have been eagerly awaiting, is the complete overhaul of the Centre’s 450-square-metre roof. The old, corrugated iron roof, which has been the primary culprit for the rainwater problems, is being replaced with modern OSB (Oriented Strand Board) and a durable membrane system. This upgrade isn’t just a quick fix; it comes with a robust 15 to 20-year guarantee, promising peace of mind for the Centre’s future. The entire construction process is being meticulously overseen by the Centre’s manager, Civil Engineer Ünal Aykaç, and Construction Technician Seyhan Bora Güleçyüz, working hand-in-hand with the contractors, ASK İnşaat, led by Sami Kaya.

With a bit of luck and continued hard work, the roof renovation is expected to be completed within the next week. Once the roof is watertight, the team can then turn their attention to the internal damage caused by the leaks, including the ceilings, walls, and flooring of the main hall, as finances permit.

Community Spirit: The Lifeline of the Centre

What truly makes this Centre special, and what I’ve observed throughout my time here, is its unwavering reliance on community support. Unlike many institutions, the Didim Alevi-Bektashi Cultural Centre does not receive external funding. Every single improvement, every new book, every repair, is made possible through the generous donations (known as ‘lokmalar’) from its visitors and the income generated from various community events.

This self-sufficiency is a testament to the incredible dedication of its members, who are committed to preserving their faith and culture and ensuring the Centre meets the needs of everyone who walks through its doors.

How You Can Contribute

As the renovation work progresses, the Centre continues to welcome contributions from all friends and supporters. Every little bit helps in these vital efforts to safeguard this important cultural hub for future generations. The community extends its heartfelt thanks to everyone who has already contributed and to those who are considering doing so. May all your good deeds and offerings be accepted.
