Didim’s Animal Shelter Scandal: What are the ‘Death Pits’ Unearthing?

As a long-time resident of Didim and Akbük, I’ve witnessed our vibrant community come together for many causes, but few have stirred such profound emotion as the recent allegations surrounding the Didim Municipality Animal Shelter. Yesterday, hundreds of animal rights advocates, including many familiar British and international faces, gathered in front of the shelter to protest what they’ve dubbed the ‘Didim Shame Cemetery,’ demanding immediate answers and accountability for the alleged ‘death pits’ and systemic irregularities. This isn’t just a local issue; it’s a matter of conscience that resonates deeply with all of us who call this beautiful region home.

The protest, spearheaded by the Didim Animal and Nature Protection Association (DİHAD), brought together a diverse group of animal lovers to voice their outrage against the Didim Municipality’s alleged inhumane practices towards stray animals. The allegations include claims of serious misconduct and what many are calling a massacre. Demonstrators marched from the shelter grounds to the area identified as the ‘death pits,’ where they symbolically covered a sign reading ‘Pet and Owned Animal Cemetery’ with their own banner proclaiming ‘Didim Shame Cemetery’.

Grave Allegations: Fraud and Misconduct Uncovered

The scandal gained significant traction following a criminal complaint filed by animal rights advocate İbrahim Kaya. His investigation revealed deeply troubling claims, including allegations of official document forgery. Kaya reported finding two dogs wrapped in black bags in the shelter area. Upon examining their microchip information, he discovered that one animal was still registered as alive in the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry’s PETVET system, while the other’s chip record was entirely absent. This discrepancy raises serious questions, particularly concerning the support payments local administrations receive from the ministry for sterilisation activities.

Kaya’s complaint highlights suspicions that deceased animals might be falsely recorded as alive or that their deaths are not officially registered, potentially leading to fraudulent payments and public financial damage. He has called for a detailed examination of all records, urging authorities to uncover the full extent of these alleged irregularities.

A United Front: Expats and Locals Demand Justice

The protest yesterday was notable for the strong presence of both Turkish and British animal lovers, united in their demand for justice. It was impossible to miss the fervent chants of ‘Hak- Hukuk- Adalet’ (Rights, Law, Justice) and ‘Hatice İstifa’ (Hatice Resign), echoing through the air, demonstrating a powerful, cross-cultural solidarity. The passion was palpable, a testament to the shared values of compassion and fairness that bind our community.

Bilal Süren, President of the Didim Animal and Nature Protection Association (DİHAD), delivered a powerful press statement, frequently interrupted by applause from the crowd. He stressed the critical need for transparent oversight of animal shelters, stating, “Blocking access to shelters and opaque management styles only serve to cover up crimes. We will relentlessly follow this process to ensure that the truth buried beneath that soil is brought to light and that those responsible are brought before justice.”

Süren’s impassioned speech continued, “We are here to seek justice for our street animals, those unjustly buried. An activist, a life defender, discovered these unlawfully buried souls and filed the necessary complaints. The judicial investigation is ongoing, and we hope the authorities will maintain the same level of sensitivity they showed at the outset. We know we are right! We have evidence that lives have been unlawfully taken. At the end of this judicial investigation, from the top down, whoever is responsible will be held accountable.”

Who is Accountable? The Municipality’s Role Questioned

Süren directly challenged the notion that any law permits such actions. “Even this awful Law 5199 does not tell you to kill. There is no law that destroys life, that says kill! They were entrusted to you! What was it? A governorship instruction? Come on, show us that instruction! Show us the written instruction from the governorships. There is no such instruction. Even if there were, no instruction is above the law. What does this law say? It says gather them, from the Ministry to the Governorships, to the District Governorships. Does it say kill? No! To kill or to keep alive is at the discretion of local governments. Today, all the lives lost, which we will see shortly, were at the discretion of Didim Municipality.”

He concluded, “This means the ‘kill order’ was given by the Didim Municipality management. We know very well, with evidence, that these lives were unlawfully taken. We have also witnessed them collecting animals from people’s gardens and balconies. You all heard the name Mustafa Çark! In the early hours, five or six in the morning… He collected animals that people had adopted and tried to keep alive, from private property, using public budget vehicles allocated to him and his department for public duty. He stole them! Until yesterday, there was no sign here, no security camera. They were caught red-handed! Yesterday, they immediately put up a sign. What does the sign say? ‘Stray Animal Cemetery, Pet Burial Area’… Wow, wow! We are the conscientious owners of every soul they unlawfully buried! Officially, the Didim Municipality management is responsible. By writing ‘stray’ on that sign, they have also absolved themselves of responsibility. Didim Municipality management, you who take lives; you are nothing to this society! You will be held accountable.”

During the protest, activists expressed strong indignation at the fact that a sign reading ‘Pet and Owned Animal Burial Area’ was only erected after the scandal broke, in an area previously lacking any warning signs or security cameras, and where no environmental health precautions had been taken. DİHAD President Bilal Süren and İbrahim Kaya vehemently denounced this belated action, declaring the area with the sign ‘Stray Animal Cemetery, Pet Burial Area’ as the ‘Didim Shame Cemetery’ and demanding immediate accountability from those responsible. Allegations also surfaced regarding the shelter manager, Mustafa Çark, reportedly using public vehicles outside working hours, late at night or early morning, to collect animals from private properties, even using his personal vehicle, and telling citizens, “This has nothing to do with Didim Municipality, the Ministry of Interior sent me, complain to whomever you want.”
