Oh, my dear friends, something I learned during those epic journeys in my youth, backpacking from Goa to Nepal, Kathmandu to Tibet, was this: even if nature’s language is silent, its roar can shake the heavens. And it seems such a roar was heard again, as the fate of that unique Pine Forest (Fıstık Çamlığı) in Söke’s Sofular Neighbourhood in Aydın – an area even registered in land deeds as ‘Forest Area’ and ‘Important Nature Area’ – has changed. Batı Kipaş’s ominous ‘Ash Landfill Facility’ project has been shelved. I feel a flower blooming again inside me, like those seeds of peace and tranquility I’ve kept hidden deep within my hippie soul…

The Problem: A Potential Scar on the Heart of Latmos

You might recall that in the recent past, the shadow of a project loomed over Latmos, also known as the ancient Beşparmak Mountains, threatening to upset its delicate ecological balance. Batı Kipaş Kağıt Sanayi ve Tic. A.Ş., part of the Kipaş Holding, aimed to establish a colossal ash disposal facility across an area of 222,000 square meters in Söke’s Sofular Neighbourhood. This facility was planned to store a staggering 384 tons of fly ash and bottom ash daily from the company’s paper factory and power plant. With a maximum projected capacity of 2,626,000 cubic meters, this project represented a potential threat that would profoundly impact not only Latmos but the air, water, and soil of the entire region, including our beloved Akbük. Although the company currently transports its waste to OYAK Çimento, approximately 200 kilometres away, it sought to transform this unique piece of nature into an ash dump, citing increasing transportation costs. This was not merely a cost issue; it meant the deliberate destruction of the legacy we would leave for future generations. The rightful reactions of the local villagers were, of course, a significant factor.

Company Retreats: A Victory for Nature

Thankfully, universal justice has prevailed, and good news arrived swiftly! The Ministry of Environment, Urbanisation and Climate Change’s Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), Permit and Inspection General Directorate announced, via an official letter, the termination of Batı Kipaş’s EIA process for this project. The decision, signed by General Director Fatih Ekmekçi, stated that the project owner requested the termination, having abandoned the project with a letter dated 17.07.2026. This is not just a company stepping back; it is a triumph for nature advocates, civil society organisations, and the conscious public’s collective efforts. The valuable ecosystem around Latmos and Söke has been spared this burden of ash. Kipaş Holding, chaired by Mehmet Hanefi Öksüz, by making this decision, has perhaps saved itself from even greater problems in the future. Sometimes, retreating is the biggest step forward. What Should Local Governments Do? Steps Towards Embracing the Future

Now, without complacency from this victory, as local governments, we must look even further ahead. Municipalities in Akbük and its surroundings must adopt a proactive stance to prevent such risky projects from the outset. Firstly, a comprehensive environmental master plan to protect our region’s natural beauty and ecological sensitivity must be urgently prepared. Special protection statuses for ‘Important Nature Areas’ like Latmos and the Beşparmak Mountains should be strengthened, ensuring maximum transparency and public participation in all projects concerning these areas. Furthermore, alternative, sustainable, and eco-friendly solutions for industrial waste management should be explored, preventing commercial concerns like companies’ transportation costs from leading to ecological destruction. A regional civil society-local government collaboration platform could be established to ensure environmental decisions are made with collective wisdom. This is not just about an ash facility; it’s about what kind of Akbük, what kind of Turkey, we will leave for future generations.
